Oscar Okwero is a celebrated Cybersecurity leader in Kenya currently working as a security engineer with IOM. He has done several high-profile cyber advisory engagements with private and public organisations locally and in the region. What was your Chevening Cohort, what did you study and in which University? I was in the 2018/19 cohort and studied MSc IT Cybersecurity at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. How was your Chevening experience and how did it or has it changed/impacted your life? l had many experiences that stood out. Some examples are meeting my childhood football legend Steven Gerrard, visiting the Scottish islands, attending the Ceilidh dance in Glasgow, and visiting the Commonwealth House and Downing Street. As a Chevening Leader, what would you consider your proudest moment or greatest achievement? My proudest moment was seeing the tears of joy in my elder sister's eyes on my graduation because she and l both knew how tough that journey had been. Who or what has had the greatest influence on your life? My grandfather and Uncle have had the biggest influence on me since they took me in after l lost my parents at an early age. What is the most important lesson you have learned in life? I have learnt resilience will always carry you further. Respect for other people makes life more liveable, stay hungry as that ensures you keep self-improving. Lastly, the power of faith in human life is often understated. How would you like to be remembered? I desire to die empty. As people remember me, I want them to think of someone who achieved whatever l needed to and did not leave anything undone by my last breath.
